A Brief History
The town was originally named "Pinegrove", and local lore relates that the change to "Sebastopol" had something to do with a bar fight! Stories are vague, but apparently this fight was so enormous it was likened to the British siege of the Russian seaport of Sevastopol. There are still a few, older, businesses in Sebastopol which retain the name "Pinegrove" or "Pinecone."
In the late 1800's and turn of the century, Sebastopol became know as the Gravenstein Apple Capital of the World. The fertile valley was, then, planted to vast plum and apple crops, establishing a thriving economy in agriculture. Today, most of the orchards are replaced by vineyards. |
Demographics
The 200 census found 7,774 people in 3,250 households in Sebastopol. The local area houses about 50,000 in a high scale economy. Census data shows that the population has a higher proportion of older people, indicating that young people often leave the area. Possible reasons could be the high cost of living, and lack of other young people. Other reasons could be the wonderful quality of life which brings many older people in to retire
Climate
Sebastopol's average rainfall is 36 inches per year, and general climate is moderate. Located close to the ocean, we receive gentle ocean breezes keeping the area cool in the summer. There is no annual snowfall, and only a few days each year of frost.
The Sebastopol population is very progressive and highly active in the fight against climate change. Because Sebastopol has such generous sunshine, we are highly involved in exploiting solar power possibilities. The town has a goal of installing one megawatt of solar power production across the town - equivalent to decking the roofs of 500 average-sized homes with solar panels. The community is very attuned to individual responsibility in reducing carbon emissions, and has a very ambitious policy towards that goal.

Sebastopol is a fun place to live or visit. The area is famous for its beautiful wineries, and taking a wine tour is always a fun activity. Sebastopol also has wonderful walking and bike trails. Sebastol has a nine hole golf course, excellent museum, community recreation center and beautiful parks. |
